Step 3: You can either do the same to determine your character's role within that story! Feel free to twist the role around as necessary.

Character Roles

 

1. Princess 

One day your prince will come... Or maybe you're going after him! Or maybe you've been cursed/captured/whatever and are in need of rescue! Those towers won't climb themselves, and those kisses that awaken you from a century of slumber aren't exactly cheap.

 

2. Prince Charming/Heroic Knight 

You're handsome (hopefully). You're charming (you think). You have a great outfit (this is debatable). Regardless, it's time to go find and rescue your one true love! ... Er, wherever she or he might be.

 

3. Villian 

Man, those two up there sure are annoying, aren't they? Maybe it's time to do some kidnapping, curse some royalty, plague a kingdom, or whatever other nefarious deed you might be thinking of. In any case, the truly important thing is to make sure your cape and collar are appropriately intimidating and black.

 

4 . Red Riding Hood 

... Or whichever other cute little girl that roams the woods in her free time that you can think of. You're cute, you have a pretty outfit, and there's something growling in the bushes but whatever it is, it can't be too dangerous, can it?

 

5 . Wolf 

You're a wolf. Or a bear. Or some other animal. Or some random person with animal ears and a tail. Maybe you're evil, maybe you're just misunderstood, but you still can't stand those annoying people that keep wandering around your forest. Maybe they're even in your house, eating your food! The nerve! Or maybe they just look delicious, who knows.

 

6 . Dragon 

You're a fucking dragon. Maybe you've kidnapped a snack, maybe someone came to hunt you down, maybe some hobbit is stealing your treasure, maybe you're just chilling. You're a dragon.

 

7 . Witch 

Bring out the hat and broomstick, it's time to get the cauldron bubbling. Good, misunderstood, evil, who knows what you are. Except for a witch. You're definitely a witch. Try to avoid shoving small children into your oven and you should be fine.

 

8 . Cheery Animal Sidekick 

Cheep cheep! Boy that princess sure is pretty, huh? You should sing with her and do her chores for her and obey her slavishly- wait... Well, whatever you're doing, you're cute and small and mildly annoying.

 

9 . Cursed Prince 

Life was just perfect for you, until you got on the wrong side of that witch/wizard/cheery animal sidekick pushed just too far. Now you're cursed! Into a beast? Into a frog? Maybe you have really bad acne now? It could be anything (seriously, anything you can think of) but luckily, the cure is simple. Find your one true love and get that magical first kiss.

 

10. Fairy Godmother 

When your princess is in need, she's only got one person to turn to. Her fairy godmother. It's your job to advise her, help get her out of any scrapes she happens to be in, or maybe you got her in the mess to begin with.

 

11. Random Extra 

Wow, all those other guys sure are weird, aren't they? You'll just get back to work. Even with all this nonsense going on, life continues.

[Nico makes a mental note to clean it first thing in the morning. He's also relieved that he'd had the wisdom to use only his nickname when he first arrived. Otherwise, the jig would've been so up in this moment.]

[He smiles, feeling himself relax against his better judgment.]

[There's a moment where Jehan tries to remember if his godmother knows the di Angelos. He shrugs, clearly not worried about if she does or not.

(She does. He knows it. He's just not sure there's a Nicolo in the family.)]

Ah, what does it matter. Thank you for coming to the party. I hope you've enjoyed yourself so far?

[Praise the gods. Now he doesn't need to explain why he's here or anything like that. Nobody needs to know about how troubled his family is, and he doesn't want to lie to this family after taking him in.]

I have, and it's been surprisingly educational.

[Nico turns to lean his back against the edge instead, looking up at the sky.]

In all seriousness, I am enjoying myself. A lot more people than I expected, but I'd guess your family is pretty popular?

Oh, not really. Father made certain of that. But Mama still has friends from before the marriage and Marianne knows plenty of people, not to mention the few friends I made in school, but I've never met a good seventy-five percent of these people!

I have a feeling the three of you could easily turn that around.

[He runs a hand through his hair, giving Jehan a somewhat sheepish look.]

Honestly, so far, you're the only person I've spoken with tonight, let alone know.

[He starts and turns to face Nicolo more, a bit distressed at that]

What? Oh, no, no that won't do. You should meet people! There are so many interesting and wonderful people, it's a shame not to speak to them.

[He shakes his head, a light blush dusting his cheeks.]

Ah...Don't trouble yourself over it. I like listening to people more, and, well, I like talking to only a few people. Really, I'm happy just talking to you, if no-one else.

But I'm not very interesting at all. I blather on about poetry or death or my flowers or--really, I'll bore you half to death.

I don't see any of that being boring. You obviously have a passion for them, so that means there's something interesting about those subjects.

[Stubborn as a mule. Nico thinks for a moment.]

How long does this ball last?

[He knows the answer, but he'd like to keep up the illusion of being some traveling guy for as long as possible.]

Tonight's will last until ten, tomorrow's until eleven, and then the last one will end at midnight.

[He laughs]

At which point the celebrations for my birthday will begin, though I've told everyone no parties until after we've cleaned up from these three. Oh, I feel bad for the servants, I really do.

[He nods.]

Then I'll make sure to come to the other two as well. We can meet here. I don't know if I'll be able to stay long enough to participate in a birthday celebration, though.

[Then Nico chuckles.]

Honestly, for all their mock grumbling, I feel that they'll do a lot for you. You seem the type to inspire loyalty with them.

[Jehan is so red right now. So very red]

Oh--really, you don't have to come to any of them, or say anything like that! I'm still the young master to most of them, the boy who still climbs trees and breaks ankles doing it.

I might not have to, but I want to. You're good company, and we've only been talking for a few minutes.

[Nico grins, and there's a part of him that's very pleased to have made the "young master" blush.]

Flatterer! If I didn't know better, I'd suspect that Courfeyrac sent you. Would you like to dance? There's no worries about a scandal here.

[He hesitates, then moves so that he can give Jehan a small bow.]

I'd be honored, but I apologize in advance if I step on your toes. I'm a little rusty.

Nonsense, I'm more likely to step on yours.

[He offers Nicolo his arm and guides him to the ballroom, smiling widely. There's just something about the young man that he adores.

They get to the center of the room and take their places; Jehan wants to lead first, and so he rests a hand on Nico's waist and starts spinning him around the floor in a waltz]

[Nico is relieved to find that he's able to keep up and not step on Jehan's toes. He hasn't done ballroom dancing in months. Yet it looks like his body remembers how to do it, even if his mind doesn't.

He's also pretty sure he's having more fun dancing with Jehan than with any of his other partners, especially since he can't stop grinning.]

You're too modest! You dance like you were born to!

Because Mama made sure I knew how to waltz! "Boys or girls, petit, you will need to waltz them off their feet!"

Then your mother is very wise.

[So amused. And now, it's time to turn the tables for the next song. The Fox Trot happens to be a favorite of his, and he'll smoothly transition them into it.]

I'll be certain to tell her that but watch out, she may try to play matchmaker!

[He laughs as he's guided into the next dance]

Duly noted, though I don't think that's as scary as you make it sound.

[The young lord and his mysterious guest end up dancing the night away and the next day has Jehan utterly besotted with his strange and lovely dance partner. The servants all laugh indulgently and tease him a little, but Jehan swears the boy and he are destined.

The next night find Jehan in a striking blue suit on the balcony, waiting for his partner]

[Donning the donkey skin the following morning comes with a surprising pang of pain in his heart. He shakes it off as he goes about his day, though not before carefully cleaning and disposing of the shattered glass on the balcony. Thoughts of seeing the young Prouvaire again put an extra spring in his step, though luckily no-one noticed to call him out on it.

That night, Nico wears his moonlight silver clothes. His heart rate picks up as he makes his way to the meeting spot without appearing to be in a rush. A smile makes an appearance on his face when he sees Jehan waiting for him.]

I hope you haven't been waiting long?

I've been waiting since we parted.

[He smiles and takes Nicolo's hands, kissing both of his cheeks]

I'm afraid I've been a bit of a dolt over all of this. The poor servants!
