Character Roles

 

1. Princess 

One day your prince will come... Or maybe you're going after him! Or maybe you've been cursed/captured/whatever and are in need of rescue! Those towers won't climb themselves, and those kisses that awaken you from a century of slumber aren't exactly cheap.

 

2. Prince Charming/Heroic Knight 

You're handsome (hopefully). You're charming (you think). You have a great outfit (this is debatable). Regardless, it's time to go find and rescue your one true love! ... Er, wherever she or he might be.

 

3. Villian 

Man, those two up there sure are annoying, aren't they? Maybe it's time to do some kidnapping, curse some royalty, plague a kingdom, or whatever other nefarious deed you might be thinking of. In any case, the truly important thing is to make sure your cape and collar are appropriately intimidating and black.

 

4 . Red Riding Hood 

... Or whichever other cute little girl that roams the woods in her free time that you can think of. You're cute, you have a pretty outfit, and there's something growling in the bushes but whatever it is, it can't be too dangerous, can it?

 

5 . Wolf 

You're a wolf. Or a bear. Or some other animal. Or some random person with animal ears and a tail. Maybe you're evil, maybe you're just misunderstood, but you still can't stand those annoying people that keep wandering around your forest. Maybe they're even in your house, eating your food! The nerve! Or maybe they just look delicious, who knows.

 

6 . Dragon 

You're a fucking dragon. Maybe you've kidnapped a snack, maybe someone came to hunt you down, maybe some hobbit is stealing your treasure, maybe you're just chilling. You're a dragon.

 

7 . Witch 

Bring out the hat and broomstick, it's time to get the cauldron bubbling. Good, misunderstood, evil, who knows what you are. Except for a witch. You're definitely a witch. Try to avoid shoving small children into your oven and you should be fine.

 

8 . Cheery Animal Sidekick 

Cheep cheep! Boy that princess sure is pretty, huh? You should sing with her and do her chores for her and obey her slavishly- wait... Well, whatever you're doing, you're cute and small and mildly annoying.

 

9 . Cursed Prince 

Life was just perfect for you, until you got on the wrong side of that witch/wizard/cheery animal sidekick pushed just too far. Now you're cursed! Into a beast? Into a frog? Maybe you have really bad acne now? It could be anything (seriously, anything you can think of) but luckily, the cure is simple. Find your one true love and get that magical first kiss.

 

10. Fairy Godmother 

When your princess is in need, she's only got one person to turn to. Her fairy godmother. It's your job to advise her, help get her out of any scrapes she happens to be in, or maybe you got her in the mess to begin with.

 

11. Random Extra 

Wow, all those other guys sure are weird, aren't they? You'll just get back to work. Even with all this nonsense going on, life continues.

Why can't we? Is it Electra di Angelo? You've the same name--surely you know she's been disgraced and rejected from all of society, yes? If she's the problem, it's been taken care of! Or is it something else?

[He frowns at that, confused and concerned, though definitely not for Electra.]

No, I didn't hear about her disgrace. I'm going to have to speak with my sister about that.

[If she's okay. Oh gods above she'd better be okay or so help him....]

But it wasn't just that. It's...a complicated position I'm in.

[Sister?

Well, women tend to have better gossip than men, as sexist as that is. They just do!]

What is it? I can help, Nicolo. I want to help.

[Nico chews his lip as he thinks about it. While he wants to go back and check on the state of his home, the specter of his step-mother still frightens him. Besides, he can't reclaim his title. He renounced it the night he left. If Nico's being honest with himself, then he'll have to admit that he doesn't really want to go back. He's happier here without the memories of his family lingering at every corner.

Staying, though, will require him to keep using the donkey skin. He owes it to these people for taking him in to be a quiet, unobtrusive servant, and the skin allows him to be that. Yet...perhaps there's a way to be noticed and remain here, even if that means only being noticeable to Jehan. The enchantment really only works on his physical body, and the nondescript clothes of servants bolster the illusion.

The gears are definitely turning in his head.]

If you could give me a token of your esteem, such as a ring or bracelet of some kind, then...maybe you'll be able to see me sooner than either of us think. I can't really tell you for sure.

[Without a moment's hesitation, Jehan pulls off his ring. His signet ring, the one labeling him a Prouvaire.]

[Nico grins and kisses Jehan.]

Perfect! The moment we see each other, I'll give it back to you.

[Gods above this crack pot idea had better work. He's not sure he could bear watching Jehan's heart break while being virtually invisible to the young man. Not to mention move on.]

And I shall not let you go again. Now, shall we dance or...dance?

[This night ends much like the one previous, though there's probably a bit more passion since it's supposedly their last night together. Not that Nico's going to complain. If anything, it makes him more determined to make this plan work.

It doesn't make slipping out before dawn weigh any less heavily on his heart. He sighs as he dons the skin once more, but makes sure that the ring is on his finger. Nico prays fervently that this works as he goes to do his duties as a servant in the Prouvaire household.]

[These duties today include tending to the young lord. He's distraught yet again, refusing to leave his room for anything but an emergency. His food has to be carried up to him and he refuses to dress.

Nico's ordered to deliver the boy's lunch, and when he gets there Jehan's room is a disaster. Books, clothing, flowers--all of it is scattered everywhere]

[If there's one thing Nico's sadly good at, it's repressing emotions. The guilt and sorrow at seeing the young Prouvaire like this almost shatters his heart, but he casts them aside. He has a duty to Jehan to help pick up the pieces.

He sets the tray near his love silently, not trusting his voice at the moment, and then starts cleaning up the mess. He'll stop if Jehan truly doesn't want him to do that, of course.]

Stop. Stop.

[Jehan is reclined on a chaise lounge, arm over his eyes]

Just stop. Unless he's come back, it doesn't matter what my room looks like. I'll never entertain anyone else again, I swear it.

[Nico straightens, turns, and sets his hands on his hips. This is a no-nonsense stance that he doesn't get to use very often, but he feels that this is a good time to use it. He refuses to allow Jehan to wallow when he can do something about it.

It's just going to be hard without speaking. The point is for him to notice Nico visually, after all.

So, he huffs, and decides to throw his notion of stopping when Jehan tells him to right out the front door with its luggage. The servant starts cleaning up the room again.]

[Jehan huffs a little, waiting for the servant to obey. When he doesn't, Jehan turns to glare at him]

I said to stop! It doesn't matter!

[Nico's body language, and his expression, are clear in that he thinks the young master is being ridiculous. He's even reasonably sure that Jehan's mother and guardian will be in agreement with him. Still...he knows this is painful for the other.

Glancing around the room, he spots a hazel tree flower and some oak leaves. Two of the very few flowers that he knows the meaning of. Nico picks up the poor, drooping things, and gently goes to set them next to the tray of food. Reconciliation, peace, bravery.]

[Jehan frowns again, curious enough to get up and see what the servant (he's never seen this one before, he must be new) has put next to his tray]

...Reconciliation?

[After finding a pen, Nico goes to scribble something on a discarded scrap of paper. He puts it next to the oak leaves before going back to cleaning up the room.

It says, "We're worried about you. It hurts seeing you in pain like this and knowing we can't help."]

[Oh, a mute. Jehan reads the note, sighing]

Just...if any of you can help me find Nicolo, please tell me? I miss him already...

[Nico nods, biting his lip as he thinks. He glances over at the tray, seeing that none of the food has been touched. Frowning, the servant finishes straightening the books before returning. Nico taps the tray gently, using the hand that has the ring on it.]

I'm not--

[Wait a second. His hand.

Jehan grabs Nico's hand, inspecting the ring and looking back up at his face, going between the two for a moment]

My ring. You have my ring, but I gave that to Nicolo...

[Nico lets him, and Jehan might just see a smile. He can scarcely believe that this actually worked. In case he doesn't see the smile, though, the servant nods and with his other hand taps at the donkey skin, inviting him to take it off.]

...Nicolo?

[Why is he wearing that nasty thing, anyway? Where are his suits? The young lord quickly removes that donkey skin, breaking into tears when he finally recognizes his mysterious lover]

What--?

[Gently, he brushes away some of Jehan's tears.]

I told you that after last night, you wouldn't be able to see me again. The skin was enchanted so that I could get away from my step-mother, and I kept it on after I got hired into your household as a servant. I was afraid that if she learned where I went, she'd try to get me back.

Electra?

[He nods.]

I don't know how much you know about her, but she's the reason I fled. A year after my father died, she...ah, took an interest in me that was distinctly uncomfortable. [That's putting it kindly.] My half-sister, Hazel, helped me.

[It takes a minute, but then it hits Jehan and he makes a face]

...oh, gross. Well, like I said last night, Electra has been disgraced. Miss Hazel is now in charge of the di Angelo estate, or will be in a month or so when all the paperwork is finalized. [Dryly] Apparently, flirting with the duke's engaged son was enough to get people to look very closely at your stepmother.
